Tesla’s robots disappointed in every respect

San Francisco, Oct. 3, 2022

Tesla unveiled two prototypes of its Optimus humanoid robot at its AI Day event last Friday.

The first, dubbed Bumble C, was able to walk on stage and wave to the audience. Tesla showed pre-recorded demos in which the robot performed tasks such as moving boxes and picking up a can.

The second prototype (first-generation Optimus)was unable to walk under its own power. This version uses Tesla-developed actuators, power electronics and a 2.3-kWh battery, which Musk says is enough for about a day’s work on a single charge. The robot will use the same technology as Tesla’s self-driving systems.

The bottom line is that Musk did not meet the lofty expectations at all.

More detail on this tomorrow.
