Cassie ran world record for bipedal robots

A bipedal robot made by Agility Robotics recently set a Guinness World Record for the 100-meter dash. The robot, named Cassie, ran the distance in 24.73 seconds without falling at Oregon State University’s Whyte Track and Field Center.

According to Alan Fern, project collaborator and professor of artificial intelligence at OSU, this result was possible thanks to the robot’s mechanical hardware and the advanced AI used to control that hardware.

The walking machine was developed in OSU’s College of Engineering and OSU spinout company Agility. Since its launch in 2017, the robot has been taught to run, walk and climb stairs at Oregon State University’s Dynamic Robotics and AI Lab.

Last year, Cassie jogged a distance of 3.1 miles in about 53 minutes on a single battery charge, using machine learning to maintain an outdoor running stride.
