U.S. President Biden signed a bill Monday that will mandate AI training for federal employees who purchase AI technologies. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) will establish the program, which will educate federal employees in program management, procurement and other areas about the benefits and risks of AI.
The bipartisan bill was introduced by Sens. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio) last year. It passed the Senate in December 2021 and the House last September. The bill was spearheaded in the House by U.S. Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-N.Y.).
The bill would require the OMB director to work with industry and academic experts to develop training. In a statement, Peters said the legislation will help ensure that AI technologies are used “ethically and in a manner consistent with our nation’s values.”
The bill aligns with recommendations to promote AI education at the federal level made by the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence in its report last year.
