Musk doesn’t rule out failure of Twitter

San Francisco, Nov. 10, 2022

In his first company-wide message to Twitter employees, Elon Musk urged all workers to return to the office at least 40 hours a week and warned of „challenging times ahead.“ In two emails sent Wednesday, Musk said the company needs to increase its subscription revenue or else „it’s quite possible Twitter won’t survive the coming economic crisis.“

Musk said Twitter needs to generate about half of its revenue from subscription fees. He said the economic future looks „bleak,“ especially for a company like Twitter that „depends on advertising in a tough economic climate.“

Twitter’s main focus is on launching its Blue subscription service, an $8-a-month subscription that adds the verified blue checkmark and other features, he wrote.

Another email said the „absolute priority“ in the next few days is to block all verified trolls, bots and spam accounts on the platform.

The news comes at a time when Twitter is dealing with a flood of fake verified accounts posing as celebrities and other high-profile individuals.

These include various U.S. presidents, the Nintendo of America account, software giant Valve and LeBron James, whose fake account claimed the player had requested a trade.
