Twitter: Blue is coming but is between 15-30% more expensive
San Francisco, 12/12/2022
Twitter today announced the relaunch of its Blue verified subscription service, which costs $8 per month via the web and $11 per month via its iOS app. The higher price for iOS is intended to offset the 15% to 30% cut Apple is getting from in-app purchases through its App Store.
Those who subscribe to Twitter Blue will get a blue “verified” tick, as well as the ability to edit tweets, upload higher-resolution 1080p videos, and access read mode, the company said.
To subscribe to Blue, individuals must first register a phone number. Elon Musk said Twitter will manually authenticate each account before adding a blue tick.
To prevent impersonators, accounts that try to change their handle, display name, or profile photo after registration will have their label automatically removed until Twitter verifies the account again.
The company is also replacing the existing “Official” label for brands with a gold tick for companies. By the end of the week, plans say, a gray tick could be introduced for government accounts.
