Reliance Jio Infocomm offers 5G in 225 cities and towns

Indian operator Reliance Jio Infocomm announced the rollout of 5G services in 34 cities across 13 states, bringing the total number of cities and towns covered by its 5G infrastructure to 225.

Some of the cities where the telecom company has launched the service are Ananthapuramu, Bhimavaram, Chirala, Guntakal, Nandyal, Tenali, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Tezpur, Gaya, Dhamtari, Thanesar, Yamunanagar, Chitradurga, Jalgaon, Latur, Balangir and Nalco.

Other cities where 5G has been rolled out are Cuddalore, Dindigul, Kancheepuram, Karur, Kumbakonam, Nagercoil, Thanjavur, Tiruvannamalai. Telangana’s Adilabad, Mahabubnagar, Ramagundam and Mathura.

“We are very excited to roll out Jio True 5G services in 34 additional cities, bringing the total to 225 cities. Jio has reached this milestone in just under 120 days since the start of beta testing and is on track to connect the entire nation to transformative Jio True 5G services by December 2023,” the company said.

Last week, Reliance Jio announced the rollout of its 5G services in all six states of the Northeast County. The telecom company’s 5G offering has been activated in the cities of Shillong, Imphal, Aizawl, Agartala, Itanagar, Kohima and Dimapur.

By December 2023, Jio True 5G services will be available in all cities in the northeastern states, the carrier said.

Jio offers 5G connectivity on an invite-only basis, with invitees for users who live in 5G-enabled cities and have 5G-compatible smartphones.

The telecom company originally announced the start of beta testing of its 5G services in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Varanasi in October. Jio offers 5G via a standalone network architecture.

Last year, Reliance Jio Infocomm announced 5G deals with Nordic carriers Ericsson and Nokia. The deal with Ericsson marked the first partnership between Jio and Ericsson for the deployment of radio access networks in the country.

Ericsson explained that its energy-efficient 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) products and solutions and E-band microwave cellular transport solutions will be deployed in Jio’s 5G network.

Meanwhile, Nokia announced that it has been selected by Reliance Jio as a key supplier to deliver 5G radio access network equipment from its AirScale portfolio nationwide under a multi-year deal.

Reliance Jio had previously secured a mix of radio spectrum for 5G across the 700MHz, 3.5GHz and 26GHz bands. Jio is the only operator with the 700MHz low-band spectrum.
