Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding is now testing a ChatGPT-style tool that can hold conversations. An Alibaba spokesman said Damo Academy, the company’s cutting-edge technology research institute, is now conducting internal testing of the conversational AI service.
Alibaba didn’t say when it might publicly release the chatbot tool. However, there are rumors that Alibaba may merge AI technology with its workplace communications app DingTalk.

Damo, which stands for Academy for Discovery, Adventure, Momentum and Outlook, has been working in areas including natural language processing and generative AI since its launch in 2017, a spokesman said.

In 2021, Alibaba Academy released a language model with 27 billion parameters called Pretraining for Language Understanding and Generation.
Since ChatGPT was unveiled in late November, a handful of major Chinese AI tech companies have announced plans for similar AI technologies.
Chinese search engine giant Baidu said it will complete testing of its „Ernie bot“ in March. Chinese e-commerce conglomerate and Alibaba rival JD.com also plans to integrate ChatGPT-like technologies into some products.
