Musk: AI is one of the biggest risks to human civilization
San Francisco, 2/18/2023
According to Elon Musk, AI poses “one of the greatest risks” to human civilization. Speaking at today’s world government summit in Dubai, Musk said AI is both positive and negative and has “big, big promises, big capabilities,” but also represents a ” great danger”.
Musk also commented on OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot, saying it shows “how advanced AI has become.” AI has been considered advanced for some time, but lacks the appropriate user interface for humans to access, he said.
The CEO also believes that the safety of AI should be regulated as it “poses a greater risk to society than cars or planes or medicines”.
Musk, who co-founded OpenAI but resigned from the board in 2018, noted that he has no open interest in the company nor “controls it in any way.”
Last year, he identified “artificial intelligence gone wrong” as one of the greatest existential threats facing humanity. The other two Musks listed were declining global birth rates and “religious extremism.”
