Poll: Majority of Americans don’t believe AI is good

New York, 2/18/2023

In a survey by Monmouth University, less than 10% of respondents said they believe AI will “do more good than harm” in society. Just over 40% of respondents believe that AI technology will eventually harm society. About half, or 46%, said they believe AI will do good and evil in equal measure.

Meanwhile, 55% said they are somewhat or very concerned that AI may eventually pose a risk to humans.

Regardless, about 60% said they had heard of ChatGPT, the AI chatbot software developed by OpenAI. Just over 70% believe AI programs like ChatGPT are used to write entire news articles. Almost 80% believe this would be a bad thing.

Overall, 91% of respondents had heard of AI technology, up 21 points since 2015.

Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute, concluded that although many people use some form of technology on a regular basis, most Americans are „skeptical“ that AI is good.
