Republicans pissed: BIG-Tech prefers Biden government

Washington, 2/19/2023

Rep. Jim Jordan, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, has subpoenaed the CEOs of Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta and Microsoft over documents related to their content moderation and government communications.

Jordan tweeted that the inquiries relate to Big Tech’s reported collusion with the Biden admin. The Ohio Republican and other GOP members have accused the tech companies of stifling conservative viewpoints on their platforms.

Jordan initially asked companies to voluntarily issue documents and notices by March 23, 2023.

On Wednesday, he escalated efforts by sending subpoena letters to Alphabet’s Sundar Pichai; Amazon.com’s Andy Jassy, Apple’s Tim Cook, Meta Platforms‘ Mark Zuckerberg, and Microsoft’s Satya Nadella.

Jordan said the House Judiciary Committee wants to understand the extent to which the U.S. executive branch has „coerced and cooperated with corporations and other intermediaries on matters like COVID-19 policy.“

Twitter was not included in the requests, Jordan explained, because by releasing the so-called Twitter files, it had „set a benchmark“ for transparency regarding its relations with the government.

At least two of the companies – Microsoft and Meta – have said they have already begun preparing documents to comply with the committee’s requests.
