Apple strengthens presence in Munich

Munich, March 5, 2023

Apple is strengthening its presence in Munich with three new research and development facilities. Over the next six years, an additional one billion euros is to be invested in the expansion of its European Center for Chip Design.

In the opinion of the CEO, the Munich engineering team is one of the “innovative world leaders”. That is why this development site will be further expanded.

The expansion is part of the global strategy of developing proprietary chips. The 5G chips from its own production are important to Apple, because the group had been at court with the unloved supplier Qualcomm in recent years.

Apple boss Tim Cook is a fan of Munich. The following points are decisive for this: 1. It is about an interesting real estate deal. Apple was able to get hold of a very desirable area in downtown Munich, although the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior also applied for this property. The budget committee of the Bavarian state parliament can congratulate itself that the deal was the most expensive property in the history of the country. Second: The European Center for Chip Design is only a few minutes’ walk away from the Technical University of Munich (TUM), which is one of the leading institutes for research and engineering in Europe. Here, Apple can easily provide sufficient staff for this

recruit companies. In the words of Cook: “We are here because of the people. The expansion of our European Center for Chip Design will enable even closer collaboration between our more than 2000 engineers in Bavaria working on groundbreaking innovations such as proprietary chip designs, power management and future wireless technologies.”
