How do Americans rate the new AI applications?

The Pew Research Center surveyed more than 11,000 Americans for their thoughts on various AI applications, including models that generate images and text. The think tank noted that „Americans make clear distinctions about the value they see in these developments.“

Of those who had heard about AI creating news articles, 16% thought it was a big step forward for the media and 45% thought it was no step forward.

Among those who had heard of AI text-to-image creators like DALL-E, 31% called it a major advance for visual arts and 39% considered it minor.

In cases where AI predicted cell protein structures, like AlphaFold, nearly 60% said it was a major advance for medical research, versus 27% who said it was minor.

As Pew noted, many respondents were unsure whether the technologies were an advance or not, showing that people are still forming opinions as AI technology advances.
