Google is serious: Up to 400 million for chatbot Claude

Anthropic, an AI startup and OpenAI competitor known for its chatbot Claude, has raised an additional $300 million in funding at a $4.1 billion pre-investment valuation.

Google previously invested $300 million to $400 million in Anthropic, giving the tech giant a 10% stake in the startup.

Spark Capital is leading the latest round, adding to the $1.1 billion previously raised by Anthropic from investors including former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, former Alameda Research co-CEO Caroline Ellison, and Skype founding engineer Jaan Tallinn had upset.

Anthropic, which bills itself as an “AI security and research company,” recently introduced general-purpose AI assistant Claude, viewed as a rival to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Claude is currently in a closed beta.
