Cyber criminals also rely on ChatGPT

ChatGPT users discover magical skills when using this tool. Whether they are students, carpenters, cooks, doctors or speleologists, they all report having landed at least one successful action for which they assumed their knowledge would not be sufficient.

It is slowly becoming apparent that various companies have completed the test phase and now want to „get down to business“.

Another species has reached this point after only a few weeks. It has never been so easy to test something really ingenious to the limits of what is possible. Free, safe and obviously not unsuccessful but successful. The Better Business Bureau investigated these activities. It recently stated that cyber criminals have also exploited the program’s AI capabilities for malicious purposes such as phishing, impersonation, and even love scams. CEO Tom Bartholomy explained: „Scammers have always been at the cutting edge of technology.“

Its staff found that most ChatGPT scams to date have involved phishing and impersonation. For example, scammers posing as Amazon sent emails notifying customers that accounts were disabled and later requesting personal information.

How you can possibly recognize that crime is involved:

– Spelling mistakes in e-mails or SMS

– Sentence structure next to it

That’s how it was until now. But „ChatGPT eliminates these flaws,“ emphasizes the CEO. As a result, it becomes „more difficult to distinguish between what is legitimate and what is fake.“

Chatbots have been around for years, especially to support business customers. Bartholomy explained that ChatGPT’s advanced conversation model has made it harder for consumers to spot red flags.

The Better Business Bureau recommends that online consumers:

– Beware of unsolicited messages

– when chatting with strangers, verify their identity by searching for contact information

questions

– use two-factor authentication for your online accounts

– as well as a password manager to generate strong passwords.
