Tik Tok flies out of Parliament’s network

London, 3/27/2023

The UK Parliament has banned the use of TikTok on its network. Members of Parliament can still access the social media app on their personal devices.

Parliament officials stated that cybersecurity is a priority for the country and that the decision would help protect the institution from cybersecurity risks.

TikTok explained that the decision was misguided and based on simple misunderstandings about TikTok.

The company claims it is actively working to store UK user data in its European data centers in a bid to reassure written lawmakers.

In 2022, TikTok stated that certain company members in China could access European user data in certain cases if the company deems it necessary.

Earlier this year, the French data protection regulator CNIL fined the social media company $5.3 million.

In 2022, the UK Information Commissioner’s Office announced its plan to fine TikTok $33 million for violating privacy laws.
