What does Apple’s acquisition of WaveOne mean?

Apple quietly acquired WaveOne, a startup working on AI algorithms for video compression.

Former WaveOne executive Bob Stankosh confirmed that the company was sold to Apple earlier this year.

WaveOne’s research focused on a machine learning algorithm for „content-aware“ video compression and decompression. The company used object and scene recognition to understand the content in each video frame and

certain items, such as B. human faces to prioritize over others.

Apple is expected to use the technology to make its streaming services more efficient, save on bandwidth costs, and/or provide higher frame rates and resolutions for certain content.

Prior to the acquisition, WaveOne had raised $9 million from investors including Khosla Ventures, Vela Partners and Blue Ivy.
