Amazon: Customers should be able to shop better after using deep learning

San Francisco, 5/17/2023

New job postings reveal Amazon’s plans to reinvent its search function by using large language models (e.g. ChatGPD).

A listing for a „Sr Technical Program Manager“ said that Amazon is working on an „AI-First initiative“ to transform the way the company searches through large-scale, next-generation deep learning techniques .

In another post for Sr SDE, Machine Learning (ML), Amazon Search, the company is working to improve shopping on its platform using LLMs‘ conversational capabilities.

The listing called it „a one-time transformation for search.“

Conversational product search has the potential to reshape a key element of Amazon’s core retail business, according to Bloomberg. The search bar at the top of the app and on the home page has become the default portal for millions of shoppers in recent years. According to Bloomberg, everyone is looking for a specific product.

The result of a survey conducted by Jungle Scout at the beginning of the year fits into this concept: According to this, more than half of US buyers would state that they start their product search on Amazon.com and that is a higher proportion than on Google.

According to Bloomberg, Amazon wants to create a new interactive conversational experience for customers that will help them compare products, get personalized suggestions and find answers to product questions.

Amazon spokeswoman Keri Bertolino declined to comment on the job vacancies. „We are investing heavily in generative AI across all of our businesses,“ she said in an email.
