Who’s Afraid of Automation?

San Francisco, 5/21/2023

Wine ghost is about ..IBM CEO Arvind Krishna says the company may stop hiring over the next few years for positions that could potentially be taken over by artificial intelligence (AI), particularly back-office Features such as specific HR roles. Krishna predicts that AI can take over up to 30% of back office functions in the next five years

Krishna anticipates that AI will enable certain tasks to be automated, including the creation of employment confirmation letters and staff transfers between departments.

However, according to Krishna, HR functions like workforce evaluation are unlikely to be automated in the next decade.
The CEO expects back-office recruitment, including HR, to be eliminated or reduced. These positions do not involve customer interaction and currently employ approximately 26,000 people.

In January, IBM announced layoffs affecting 3,900 jobs, or 1.5% of the global workforce, after the company missed its annual liquidity target.

The IBM announcement makes it clear that rapidly advancing AI and automation could lead to job losses. According to a recent report by Goldman Sachs analysts, generative AI technologies could potentially automate 300 million full-time jobs, with two-thirds of jobs in the US and Europe likely to be impacted by AI automation in some form.
