China calls for stronger security measures

Beijing, June 1, 2023

China’s Communist Party, including President Xi Jinping, has reportedly called for strengthened national security measures amid advances in AI and other issues. On Tuesday, Xi and other party members prioritized China’s leadership in advanced technologies while emphasizing political security and better management of AI and online data.

Xinhua News Agency reported that the leaders discussed „dedicated efforts to protect political security and improve security management of Internet data and artificial intelligence.“

They called for accelerated efforts to create a system to monitor risks and provide early warning.

According to Xinhua, Xi said that China’s national security problems have „increased dramatically“ and the country needs a „new development pattern with a new security architecture.“

The leaders reportedly stressed the need to prepare for „worst-case scenarios.“

China has already taken steps to regulate AI, such as proposing legislation mandating state-mandated security reviews for new generative AI services.

Baidu, Alibaba, and SenseTime all announced their own advanced AI chatbots this year, putting pressure on Beijing to regulate generative AI without stifling innovation.
