US Senate wants to deepen Ki expertise

Washington, 7.6. 2023

US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and others have organized three senator-only briefings on AI, including one secret briefing.

The bipartisan briefings will cover general AI applications, US leadership in the field, and AI in defense and intelligence and its impact.

In a letter to colleagues Tuesday, Schumer and other lawmakers said the Senate needs to deepen its expertise on AI that is „already changing our world.“

The briefings, scheduled to take place during this working period, will cover the following topics: „Where is AI today?“ will provide Senators with a basic overview of AI, what it is capable of and where it is being used.

The second briefing, entitled „What is the frontier of AI and how do we keep American leadership?“ will explore the future of AI and how it might evolve over a 10-year period.

The final confidential briefing reads, „How is the Department of Defense and Intelligence community using AI today, and what do we know about how our adversaries are using AI?“

In April, it was reported that Schumer was leading a congressional motion to regulate AI as the industry boomed.

The New York Democrat has circulated a framework for future AI regulations that he says would help „prevent potentially catastrophic damage to our country while ensuring that the US advances and leads in this transformative technology.“
