Bill Gates and XI Jinping discussed the consequences and future of generative AI

According to Reuters sources, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Bill Gates discussed the global rise of AI, with Xi expressing support for US companies bringing their AI technology to China.

While the details of today’s meeting in Beijing have not been publicly disclosed, Xi also discussed Microsoft’s business development in China, one of the sources said.

• Despite stepping down from Microsoft’s board of directors in 2020, Gates continues to unofficially represent the company. He is the main investor and partner of OpenAI.

• Xi has previously stressed the importance of using AI to boost China’s economic development, while noting the risks involved.

• In April, China’s internet regulator introduced a draft law that would require new generative AI products to undergo a security review before they are launched.

• AI-created content would also have to “reflect fundamental socialist values” and “not contain content subverting state power,” the proposed rules state.

The meeting comes as AI continues to be a top issue in US-China relations. Last year, the Biden government introduced export controls with the aim of disrupting China’s AI development as much as possible.
