OpenAI: GPT-4 generally available

OpenAI has announced the general availability of GPT-4, its latest text generation model, via its API. Developers can now integrate GPT-4 into their applications via the cloud-based API or application programming interface.

According to OpenAI, “millions” of developers have requested access to the GPT-4 API since the model was announced in March.

Existing OpenAI developers with paid API access can start using GPT-4 right now, while new developers will get access later this month.

GPT-4 surpasses its predecessor GPT-3.5 with improved text generation, reasoning, code interpretation and image support.

The model has the ability to analyze image content and answer appropriate questions. However, this ability is currently only being tested with a partner, Be My Eyes.

OpenAI also revealed the general availability of three additional APIs:

GPT-3.5 Turbo, a lower-cost version of the GPT-3 model that offers more limited features compared to GPT-4.

Whisper speech-to-text model.

DALL·E 2 image generator.

What’s next:

Later this year, OpenAI plans to allow developers to fine-tune GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 Turbo or customize using their own data.

The company will also be phasing out and discontinuing some legacy models in its API to optimize compute capacity in light of growing demand.
