Google has tested its AI chat technology at hospitals, including the Mayo Clinic, to provide medical assistance. Although still in its early stages, Google’s Med-PaLM 2 AI model can answer medical questions and provide healthcare support.
Med-PaLM 2 was trained using demonstrations by medical experts and license verification materials. It’s an updated version of Google’s PaLM 2 language model, which also supports the company’s Bard chatbot.
According to reports, the tool can help doctors with diagnostics and healthcare tasks such as summarizing documents and organizing data. Google anticipates that Med-PaLM 2 will be particularly useful in areas where healthcare professionals have limited access.
A Google study found that while the AI model had more inaccuracies than doctors, it performed similarly in areas like reasoning and accuracy of understanding.
According to a Pew Research Center poll, 60% of US adults would feel uncomfortable if their healthcare provider relied on AI for tasks like diagnosing diseases and recommending treatments, while only 39% would feel comfortable.
