CNBC survey finds: AI programs arouse more uneasiness than trust

New York, 7/24/2023

According to a CNBC poll, Americans’ discomfort with AI has increased by 10 percentage points since 2016, with 69% now expressing discomfort with the idea of AI.

Only 27% of respondents are now comfortable with AI programs mimicking human thinking and replacing human activities, down from 36% in 2016. Americans expressed major discomfort with AI in customer service (66%), medical diagnostics (65%) and self-driving cars (76%). Additionally, 21% believe AI could simplify their jobs, while 18% fear job displacement and 49% expect no impact on their jobs. The survey, conducted July 12-16 of 1,000 adults, has an error rate of +/- 3.1%.

The survey results raise questions about the need for AI regulation, as public unease may influence lawmakers’ decisions. In addition, the results underscore the importance of educating the public about the risks and benefits of AI.
