Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind, suggested that the US should require companies buying Nvidia AI chips to agree to the same commitments that leading AI firms have made to the White House.
Suleyman predicts that the rapid growth of AI could lead to language models 100 times stronger than GPT-4 within two years, which he says justifies measures such as chip sales restrictions.
• At the very least, the US should restrict sales of Nvidia chips to buyers unless they agree to the voluntary commitments, and probably “more than that,” Suleyman said.
• Suleyman is also the CEO and co-founder of Nvidia-backed Inflection AI, which developed the Pi chatbot, and a venture partner at Greylock Partners.
Background:
• In July, Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Meta, Microsoft and OpenAI pledged to adhere to White House endorsed AI security and trust standards.
• The eight measures cover areas such as third-party mockup testing and virtual watermarks to distinguish real from AI-created content.
