American AI experts: Please no regulation of AI by politicians

A survey of US AI experts found that many prefer the creation of a federal “Department of AI” for AI regulation over other options such as Congress or the private sector.

The Axios-Generation Lab-Syracuse University AI Experts Survey surveyed 213 computer science and engineering professors at leading US research universities with the following results:

• Most experts favor a federal Department of AI agency (37%) or a global organization (22%) to regulate AI, as opposed to Congress (16%), the White House (4%) or the private sector (3). %).

• While opinions differ on who should monitor AI rules, most experts agree that they should be regulated.

• A majority of respondents (58%) did not trust world leaders to deliver AI with positive impact.

• President Biden led with 9% peer support, just ahead of Google’s Sundar Pichai, Tesla’s Elon Musk and OpenAI’s Sam Altman.
