Apple has agreed to a California law that requires large companies to report their greenhouse gas emissions annually.
Senate Bill 253, co-sponsored by Senator Scott Wiener, would require California-based companies with annual revenues of more than $1 billion to disclose independently verified emissions data.
More:
• The bill requires companies to publicly report their Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions starting in 2026, followed by Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions in 2027.
• Scope 1 emissions come from company-owned sources, while Scope 2 emissions arise indirectly through the purchase of electricity and other services.
• Scope 3 emissions, which are the most difficult to track, arise through a company’s supply or value chain.
• Apple supports including Scope 3 emissions in corporate climate disclosures, according to a letter to Wiener from Mike Foulkes, Apple’s director of state and local government affairs.
• “Although these emissions can be difficult to measure, they are critical to understanding the full spectrum of a company’s climate impact,” Foulkes wrote
