Days after announcing a $4 billion investment from Amazon, generative AI startup Anthropic is in talks with Google and other investors to raise an additional $2 billion, according to The Information.
Anthropic is targeting a valuation of between $20 billion and $30 billion, including the new investment, well above March’s $4 billion valuation. Anthropic has now secured total funding of over $5 billion.
Earlier this year, Anthropic announced a $450 million Series C round led by Spark Capital, with participation from Google, Salesforce Ventures, Sound Ventures, Zoom Ventures and others.
Google also invested $300 million in Anthropic in late 2022, acquiring a 10% stake in the startup. Anthropic later announced that Google Cloud would be its preferred cloud provider.
Meanwhile, Amazon will also acquire a minority stake in Anthropic. Amazon’s initial investment will be $1.25 billion, with the chance of an additional $2.75 billion.
Anthropic later named Amazon Web Services (AWS) its primary cloud provider “for mission-critical workloads.” Anthropic now plans to run most of its workloads on AWS.
In July, Anthropic introduced its latest AI chatbot, Claude 2, to the public on claude.ai.
Claude 2 features upgrades like “more harmless answers,” better performance on tasks like multiple-choice exams, and the ability to summarize up to 75,000 words.
