Employees at the Apple Store in Towson, Maryland, have become the company’s first retail location to vote to unionize.
They also voted 65-33 to officially join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. Their goal : better pay and working conditions.
The National Labor Relations Board must still certify the vote before Apple can negotiate with the union. That process is expected to take about a week.
The group, called the Apple Coalition of Organized Retail Employees, said the decision to unionize is about „giving workers access to rights we don’t currently have.“
Apple stores in New York, Louisville and Nashville are also in the process of organizing. Last month, workers at an Apple store in Atlanta withdrew plans for a union vote, claiming Apple had engaged in a „systematic, sophisticated campaign“ to intimidate workers.
Apple has 65,000 retail employees and 250 retail stores in the United States.
