Microrobots can now swim

New York, Aug. 6, 2022

Researchers have succeeded in teaching microrobots to swim with the help of AI. This achievement can also be used for other medical purposes, according to experts.

The research was conducted by Santa Clara University, the New Jersey Institute of Technology and the University of Hong Kong. The microswimmers are important because scientists believe the mechanical lessons learned here can be used to develop microsurgeons and delivery robots in the future.

The scientists at these universities used reinforcement learning, a method that confirms to the robot what actions it should repeat, and machine learning. The microrobot was able to learn how to swim without relying on precise commands from scientists, but by learning on its own.

According to the staff at these universities, the goal is to get microrobots to adapt like biological cells.
