Google was the victim of a major outage on Tuesday. Search, Maps, Gmail and other services were gone. More than 40,000 users reported the outage, which affected 1300 servers in 40 countries. According to Google, the trigger was a software – update – problem.

The first reports arrived around 9 p.m. ET Monday and peaked about 30 minutes later before largely subsiding by 10 p.m., according to the website DownDetector.

The outage resulted in an error message in Google Search that read, „The server encountered an error and was unable to complete your request.“ Some users said they used other search engines such as Bing and DuckDuckGo during this time.

The outage follows an electrical incident Tuesday that seriously injured three people at a Google data center in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The incidents are unrelated, a Google spokesman said.
