Chinese researchers studied chatbots from Facebook, Microsoft, WeChat and others and found they had little empathy and mental health issues related to depression and addiction.
The researchers worry that the bots could negatively influence users during conversations, especially minors and people in trouble. The researchers studied Facebook’s Blenderbot, Microsoft’s DiabloGPT, Tencent’s DialoFlow and Baidu’s Plato chatbot, asking them questions typical of a fleeting shot of depression in humans. The bots, which are trained to converse with humans, showed signs of depression and addiction and scored poorly on empathy. According to the study, the bots were all trained to comment on Reddit, which could explain their responses.
The preprint study by the Chinese Academy of Science Institute of Computing Technology was conducted in collaboration with Tencent and its messaging app WeChat.
