Tesla plans to invest $3.6 billion to expand its existing Gigafactory near Reno, Nevada. The expansion will create two new factories at the site: one to manufacture advanced battery cells and another to mass produce its new electric tractor-trailers.
The truck factory will be Tesla’s first high-volume plant to produce the Semi.
The new battery factory will produce Tesla’s 4680 lithium-ion cells. It will eventually have the capacity to produce enough batteries for 2 million light-duty vehicles per year.
Tesla has not said when it plans to break ground on the factories. It says they will create about 3,000 jobs in Nevada.
After years of delays, Tesla delivered its first production semis to PepsiCo,in December. It has been five years since Tesla showed the first prototype of the electric semitrailer . The vehicle has an estimated range of 500 miles and energy efficiency per mile of less than 2 kWh.
