A report from Information describes how Apple’s AI efforts have impacted Siri through „organizational dysfunction and a lack of ambition.“ That is the reason why Apple fell behind Google, Microsoft and OpenAI.

The findings were based on interviews with more than three dozen former Apple employees in the AI and machine learning fields.

According to the interviews, Apple’s Siri team has been mocked by employees who are concerned about Apple’s lack of ability to develop new AI products based on generative AI.

In particular, they cited problems in improving Siri and its backend technology.

Additionally, the report details how an Apple team developing its Reality Pro headset was disappointed by demos showing the AI assistant driving the mixed reality device.

Due to Siri’s limitations, this team once considered alternative methods of controlling the headset, but ultimately scrapped the idea.
