What happened: IBM CEO Arvind Krishna says the company will stop recruiting for certain positions that artificial intelligence (AI) could potentially replace in the next few years, focusing specifically on back-office functions like specific HR roles.

Krishna predicts that around 30% of those roles, which employ around 26,000 people at IBM, could be replaced by AI and automation within five years.

What the Numbers Say: According to a recent report by Goldman Sachs analysts, generative AI technologies could potentially automate 300 million full-time jobs, with two-thirds of jobs in the US and Europe likely to be impacted by some form of AI automation. However, the report’s authors also estimate that generative AI could lead to a „productivity boom“ that could ultimately increase annual global GDP by an estimated 7% over a 10-year period.
