US media don’t want to be tricked by tech giants

New York, 6/17/2023

Several US media outlets reported that tech giants OpenAI, Google and others are in talks with media companies to reach agreements on using news content for AI training. Sources say publishers involved in the talks include FT, News Corp, Axel Springer, The New York Times and The Guardian.

In the foreground are:

► Discussions about copyright concerns related to AI products such as chatbots and image generators. The deals could include the tech giants paying subscription fees to access the media organizations‘ content.

►Pricing models for using news content as training data for AI models are reportedly being explored, with a proposal of US$5 million to US$20 million per year being discussed. Google has taken the lead in negotiations with UK news outlets, while OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has worked with News Corp and the New York Times.

The position of the media:

►Media groups are driven by concerns about the impact of AI on the industry and a desire to protect their own content from unauthorized use.

► Media executives want to avoid the mistakes of offering free content in the early internet age and allow big tech companies like Google and Facebook to use that content for online advertising.
