Concentrated US – state power wants in the process against US – Internet Goliaths

enforce fair competition

Washington, 8/8/2023

US government and dozens of states have fewer allegations to make. Among other things, the responsible judge deleted the accusation that the Internet group had harmed specialized providers such as Expedia or OpenTable through its behavior. The state attorneys general were unable to prove the allegation sufficiently.

However, the search engine giant will have to face up to the accusation that Google’s agreements with browser developers such as Apple (Safari) and Mozilla (Firefox) harm competition. The US Department of Justice is particularly bothered by the practice of setting Google’s search engine as the standard. Mozilla and Apple get money from Google for this.

The trial is scheduled to begin in Washington in September. In 2020, only the US Department of Justice and eleven states had filed a competition lawsuit against Google. A second lawsuit from 38 other states followed two months later. The two lawsuits have now been merged into one proceeding.
