Amazon is adding generative AI to Alexa to make the voice assistant more conversational and responsive, enabling it to handle complex requests. The improved Alexa, leveraging Amazon’s in-house large voice model, will roll out this fall to all current Echo users in the US, where Amazon already leads the smart speaker market.
Generative AI will reportedly give Alexa a more engaging and informative personality than the more “clinical” responses she is known for. Amazon says the AI upgrade makes Alexa a more conversational companion that can maintain context, get real-time information and handle multiple requests with a single command. Demos showed the assistant suggesting movies and performing smart home tasks in response to natural language requests, avoiding scripted commands and providing more natural, spontaneous responses.
Also on Wednesday, Amazon introduced the new Echo Show 8 (3rd generation) and smart home device Echo Hub, both of which will feature additional AI functionality. The Echo Show uses computer vision to adjust its screen content based on the user’s proximity. Fire TV also gets a generative AI upgrade for searching conversational content via Alexa. Finally, Amazon introduced its next-generation Echo Frames smart glasses, which feature improved voice processing and noise isolation for Alexa.
