Microsoft announces massive investment in Australia

Sidney, October 26, 2023

Microsoft announced plans to invest AU$5 billion ($3.2 billion) over the next two years to boost its AI and cloud computing capabilities in Australia. The company plans to expand its computing capacity in Australia by 250% to meet increasing demand for cloud computing, which is expected to double by 2026 due to the increasing adoption of AI.

Microsoft plans to expand its data centers in Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne by 45 percent, from 20 to 29 locations. President Brad Smith said it was the largest investment in Microsoft’s 40-year history in Australia.

The spending is “a testament to our commitment to the country’s growth and prosperity in the AI era.” Additionally, Microsoft wants to help equip 300,000 Australians with digital economy skills and its cyber threat intelligence sharing agreement with the Australian Cybersecurity Agency to improve.
