GM-backed Cruise has suspended all driverless operations in the United States. Previously, the California Department of Transportation (DMV) suspended the company’s robotaxi permit in the state. Reason: the cruise cars are “not safe for public use”.
The background was probably an incident on October 2nd. After a pedestrian was struck by another vehicle, a self-driving cruise car attempted an overtaking maneuver while the pedestrian was still on the ground.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into Cruise for pedestrian injuries related to his self-driving vehicles.
Cruise said it would pause its fleet of driverless f vehicles “to examine our processes, systems and tools.” At the same time, we will work to regain the public’s trust.
The company maintains that the DMV’s decision „has no connection to any new incidents on the road.“
To date, Cruise has offered driverless robotaxi services in Austin, Phoenix and Houston, while also conducting autonomous driving tests in Miami, San Francisco and Dallas.
Cruise received approval for 24/7 robotaxi service in San Francisco this summer.
