Breton calls on TikTok to strengthen the fight against disinformation

ELS:TikTok must “spare no effort” to counter the spread of disinformation via the short video sharing app, EU industry boss Thierry Breton demanded of the company’s CEO on Monday.
Last month, Breton gave TikTok, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, an October 25 deadline to provide information on its crisis response measures and also asked the company to provide details by November 8 on how it will ensure the integrity of elections and protects minors online on its platform.
The EU Commissioner noted the changes to TikTok’s platform in recent months, with new features to protect users and investments in content moderation and trust and security.
“My services and I are now investigating whether this is sufficient to ensure compliance with the DSA (Digital Services Act),” Breton explained to Reuters in written comments following a video call from Tik-Tok CEO Shou Zi Chew.
Because now, more than ever, we must make every effort to protect our citizens – especially children and young people – from illegal content and disinformation,” he said.
Caroline Greer, director of public policy at TikTok, said in a post on social media platform X that the company was pleased that Breton recognized its compliance efforts.
The DSA requires major online platforms to take more action against illegal and harmful online content on their platforms. It is one of a number of recent EU regulations aimed at curbing the power of Big Tech.
