Verizon and AT&T launched large portions of their 5G network in the U.S. on Wednesday, but agreed to delay the startup near airports.
The reason: there were concerns about possible 5G interference with aircraft navigation devices that can help pilots land safely in bad weather.
On Monday, the CEOs of Delta, United, FedEx Express and other major airlines and shipping companies warned in a letter that 5G could cause „catastrophic interference“ with both commercial and cargo flights.
The 5G expansion has already been delayed twice, in December and early January. Expectations remain high: Before the end of the current mona, Verizon’s 5G service is expected to reach 90 million people , while AT&T’s network will cover 75 million users by the end of the year.
The companies, along with T-Mobile, spent a total of $80 billion in a C-band auction last year to gain access to almost all the spectrum and expand their networks.
