Tesla to open charging stations to other e-vehicles as well

Tesla has applied for public funding to expand its Supercharger network in the U.S., with the stipulation that it open its charging stations to electric vehicles made by other companies.

The company has already launched a pilot program in several European cities that allows vehicles from other manufacturers to use its Supercharger outlets. In the U.S., Tesla’s fast chargers only work for its own vehicles via a proprietary connector.

According to a White House memo, Tesla is working on new Supercharger equipment that would make the charging stations compatible with non-Tesla EVs. In North America, Tesla could potentially begin rolling out these devices as early as late 2022.

Tesla has now applied for public subsidies in the U.S. to build out its charging network.

The funding is conditional on the automaker opening charging stations to other types of vehicles, possibly through adapters.

In June, the Biden administration announced plans to set standards for electric car charging infrastructure in the United States. These stipulate that charging stations must be available every 50 miles, no further than one mile from a highway. The White House had previously announced it would distribute $5 billion to states to fund charging stations along highways.
