How Waymo is using the Bay Area shutdown
5. April 2020How Waymo is using the Bay Area shutdown
San Francisco, 5.4.2020
Waymo, Google’s stable mate for self-propelled cars, announced that he will suspend his activities in California in order to comply with the suspension orders in the districts of the Bay Area, including San Francisco, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Marin, Contra Costa and Alameda.
Companies that were deemed „not essential“ were advised to close, and residents were told to stay home and go out only for things like grocery shopping.
Waymo will, however, continue to provide delivery and trucking services for its drivers and partners in Phoenix, Arizona. However, these trips will be completely driverless to minimize the likelihood of COVID-19 spreading.
Waymo has also launched its Open Dataset Challenge. Developers can participate in a contest that seeks solutions to these problems:
– 2D Detection: Based on a set of camera images, they can create a set of 2D boxes for the objects in the scene.
– 2D tracking: Using a timed sequence of camera images, you can create a set of 2D boxes and the correspondences between the boxes across the boxes.
– 3D detection: Based on one or more lidar area images and the corresponding camera images, you create a set of upright 3D boxes for the objects in the scene.
– 3D tracking: From a temporal sequence of lidar and camera data, create a set of upright 3D boxes and the correspondences between the boxes across the frames.
– Area Matching: Similar to 3D detection, but we provide additional segments from rainy Kirkland, Washington, 100 of which have 3D box labels.
There are also cash prizes to be won. The winner can expect to win $15,000, second place will earn $5,000, and third place will earn $2,000.
