The Chinese government called the „996“ work culture prevalent in the country’s tech companies a „serious violation“ of labor law. 996 means 12-hour shifts six days a week.
China’s Supreme Court and Ministry of Human Resources released a memo with ten court decisions addressing overtime in the workplace.
Chinese labor law sets a maximum overtime limit of 36 hours per month.
The 996 work culture means overtime can be up to 128 hours per month.
Chinese business magnate Jack Ma has called the 996 culture a „blessing.“
However, several Chinese big tech companies have scrapped their overtime schedules this year due to negative public opinion.
