Samsung announced that its planned chip factory in Taylor near Austin, Texas, is expected to begin production in the second half of 2024.
The 5 million-square-foot facility will focus on advanced chips for smartphones, 5G, HPC and AI applications to support the global semiconductor supply chain and meet growing demand.
As part of its official announcement Tuesday, Samsung said the plant will directly create 2,000 high-tech jobs and add thousands more to the local economy once it begins operations.
The company chose Taylor in Central Texas over locations in Arizona, Florida, New York and nearby Austin, where it has another manufacturing facility.
The announcement greatly benefits the U.S., which claimed only a 12% share of global semiconductor manufacturing in 2020, down from 37% in 1990, in an industry dominated by Taiwan, South Korea and other Asian countries.
Intel and TSMC are currently building new chip fabs in Arizona, while Texas Instruments has announced plans to invest in four new chip fabs in Sherman, Texas.
