China: New rules of algorithms

Beijing, Jan. 9, 2022

China will begin enforcing new rules regulating content recommendation algorithms on March 1. This was announced by the Chinese Cyberspace Administration (CAC).

The rules target algorithms related to filters, personalized push notifications and other Internet activities as Beijing continues its crackdown on Big Tech.

Under the new policy, companies will have to make public how their algorithms work and give consumers the ability to turn off personalized recommendations.

Apps and other internet services will be prohibited from using models that encourage internet addiction among young people and lead to price discrimination or „excessive spending.“

The policy requires companies to use algorithms to protect older people from fraud. The algorithms must also promote „positive energy.“ The final draft also includes a clause prohibiting algorithms from disseminating „fake“ news.
