Clearview AI sentenced to heavy fine

London, 5/24/2022

The U.K.’s Information Commissioner has fined Clearview AI £7.55 million ($9.5 million) and ordered the company to delete all facial image data of U.K. residents.

Clearview no longer provides its services to U.K. organizations, but continues to use the personal data of U.K. citizens under contracts in other countries, according to the U.K. Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

In the UK, the Metropolitan Police, the Ministry of Defense and the National Crime Agency have already used Clearview’s AI service.

Clearview confirmed that it no longer operates in the U.K. and that it is „not subject to the jurisdiction of the ICO,“ suggesting that it may refuse to pay the fine.
