They will come – USB – C for everyone and everything

After years of wrangling over a common charger, EU lawmakers have agreed that Apple’s iPhone and other smartphones must be equipped with USB-C ports by fall 2024.

In addition to phones, the new law will also apply to tablets, digital cameras, e-readers, portable game consoles and headphones. Laptops are to be included at a later date.

While some analysts think Apple will be most affected by this decision, because iPhones are charged with a Lightning connector, the Apple giant communicates that it is already testing USB-C connectors. The changeover could then be made as early as 2023.

What the law still performs:

– Sales of chargers and of devices are separated,

– Standards for fast chargers are harmonized

– the changes bring about a significant reduction in electronic waste.
