Tesla has canceled three job fairs planned for this month in China after Elon Musk said the company must impose a hiring freeze and reduce its workforce by 10%. The company canceled online recruiting events in China for positions in sales, research and development, and supply chain, but did not give a reason.
Tesla is „overstaffed“ in some areas and will reduce its workforce by 10%, Musk told employees in an email last Friday.
The cuts will not affect employees who build vehicles, batteries or solar panels.
Musk did not provide details on Tesla’s operations in China, where production at the Shanghai plant has been affected by the ongoing COVID closures.
The company still has more than 1,000 open positions posted in China.
Earlier this month, Musk said the company needed to impose a hiring freeze and reduce its workforce by 10% because it had a „super bad feeling“ about the economy. At the end of 2021, Tesla employed 99,290 people.
